BARNSLEY’S CAPITOL PARK TAKING PRIORITY FOR URBAN REGENERATION SPECIALIST

The development of a major mixed use scheme, Capitol Park at Barnsley, has taken a significant step forward with the beginning of construction of 30,000 sq. ft of Grade A office accommodation by England’s leading urban regeneration specialist.

Priority Sites is developing the office accommodation in units ranging from 5,000 to 30,000 sq. ft as a joint venture with Leeds-headquartered Sterling Capitol, who are responsible for the overall development of the 36-acre site, located just off junction 37 of the M1.

The offices will be an integral part of the Capitol Park scheme which will also include a new hotel and ancillary facilities, provision for a 250-space park-and-ride facility, as well as a further 400,000 sq. ft of industrial and office accommodation.

The whole development has been supported by a £2.65m public sector grant from Objective One and has been carefully planned and brought forward working closely with Renaissance South Yorkshire, Yorkshire Forward and Barnsley Development Agency.

Graham Sadler, Development Director of Priority Sites comments: “The provision of high quality office accommodation will be a great proposition particularly for those businesses where location is a key factor. Our sales message will focus on how ideally positioned the development is for avoiding the heavy traffic congestion associated with city centre office premises.  We’re offering a very real alternative at Capitol Park and expect interest to be high, particularly now that construction has commenced and there is something to see.”

Martin Croxen, Chief Executive of Sterling Capitol adds: “We’re delighted to be working in partnership with Priority Sites who have an excellent track record in providing high quality commercial premises, suitable for a wide variety of business needs.  The site is really starting to take shape now, and when completed, its occupiers and their businesses will have a very significant impact on the local economy, contributing to a very prosperous future for Barnsley.”

Both Priority Sites and Sterling Capitol have proved their expertise and capabilities in regenerating several English towns and cities.  Sterling Capitol’s Capitol Park Thorne and Capitol Park Leeds have revitalised their communities and created more than 2,500 jobs between them, while Priority Sites, about to develop its 3 millionth square foot of commercial space, accommodating over 6,000 jobs since the joint venture development company owned by The Royal Bank of Scotland and English Partnerships was founded in 1997.

The scheme is being marketed by the Leeds and Sheffield offices of Knight Frank, and Rowlands and Co, Barnsley.

Notes to editors:

Priority Sites is one of England’s most active developers with a new building contract now starting on average every four weeks. Its success is due to the fact that it provides quality business premises that fit the needs of the companies that regional and local enterprise agencies want to attract, bringing new, long-term jobs to parts of England that need them the most.  Unlike many commercial developers, building is done mainly speculatively, allowing companies to either rent or buy.
